Multifocal Intraocular Lenses — Benefits, Trade-offs and Patient Selection

Multifocal intraocular lenses are designed to provide vision at more than one distance, with the aim of reducing dependence on glasses for both distance and near tasks. For well-selected patients, the results can be excellent.

Patient selection is key. Dr Hunt has been working with multifocal and premium lenses since 2011, and that experience guides which patients are likely to benefit most — and when a different lens may be the better choice.

The latest generation of multifocal lenses offer improved contrast and significantly fewer visual side effects compared with earlier designs.

A multifocal lens is a shared decision. It works best when we've talked through what matters to you and what to realistically expect.

What to Expect

A multifocal lens provides focus at more than one distance — so you may be able to read a menu, use your phone, or move through daily life without reaching for glasses in most situations. Most well-suited patients find they rely on glasses far less than before.

There are trade-offs. Multifocal lenses can produce halos around lights at night and a slight reduction in contrast compared with a monofocal lens. Most patients adapt over weeks to months, but the experience varies — and this is exactly why the consultation matters. These trade-offs are discussed openly before any decision is made.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I still need glasses at all with a multifocal lens?

Most patients need glasses far less often. Some never reach for them in daily life. Others still use reading glasses in dim light or for sustained close work. The aim is reduced dependence, not a guarantee of complete independence in every situation.

My friend had a multifocal and loves it — does that mean I will too?

Not necessarily. People vary in how they adapt and what they notice. Your priorities and lifestyle may be quite different from your friend's. The consultation is designed to work out what is likely to suit you as an individual.

Is a multifocal lens right for your eyes?

Suitability depends on your prescription, visual priorities, and eye health. Dr Hunt discusses candidacy at your cataract assessment.
