EDOF Lenses — Extended Depth of Focus

An EDOF lens stretches the focus continuously from distance through to intermediate, rather than splitting light into separate focal points. For most patients, the result is good unaided distance vision and comfortable arm's-length vision — for screens, dashboards, and face-to-face conversation — with fewer halos than a multifocal lens.

In terms of the range of lenses available, the EDOF lens sits between monofocal and multifocal lenses. It extends your range of focus beyond what a monofocal can offer, but with fewer optical side effects typical of multifocal designs.

What Will My Vision Be Like?

Most patients can expect clear distance vision and comfortable intermediate vision without glasses. Sustained fine-print reading — books, small text, medicine labels — may still benefit from low-powered reading glasses, particularly in dim light.

For many patients, this offers some independence from glasses for many daily tasks. EDOF lenses are also available with toric correction for patients with astigmatism.

Is an EDOF Lens Right for Me?

EDOF lenses suit a wide range of patients, including some who may not be ideal candidates for a multifocal. But they're not right for everyone — and neither is any single lens type. The decision is made during your cataract assessment, based on your measurements, your eye health, and what matters most to you.
